Maintenance & Spare Parts: Ensuring Decades of Service from Your Model 50P Automatic Numbering Head
The Numberall Model 50P Automatic Numbering Head is engineered for rapid,
accurate, and consecutive serialization—representing one of the finest mechanical marking devices in the industry since its introduction in the 1930s.
With tight tolerances and high-speed indexing, it’s built to deliver crisp, permanent indents on nameplates, parts, tools, and more for decades.
Our team routinely services units over 40 years old (some dating back to the 1940s), often requiring only cleaning, lubrication, and minor part replacements—proof of superior American design and craftsmanship.
Proactive maintenance is key in high-volume environments: it prevents binding, ensures smooth actuation, and avoids costly downtime.
Stocking a few high-wear spares makes most fixes quick and in-house.
Recommended Spare Parts to Keep in Stock
These components see the most wear due to constant tension, cycling, and impact—keeping them on hand means minutes instead of days offline:
- Actuating Pawl & Retaining Pawl Springs — Under high tension; fatigue over time. A quick swap restores reliable indexing.
- Coil Return Springs — Critical for smooth return after each cycle; experience significant wear. (Not needed on units with Air Trip attachment.)
- Spare Wheels — Character wheels wear depending on material (e.g., harder steel vs. aluminum) and volume. Extras keep marks sharp and legible.
- Actuating Pawl — Precision-ground; handle carefully during disassembly to avoid damage or bending.
All genuine OEM parts are in stock for immediate shipment, including for custom or older configurations. Order via phone (207-876-3541) or email (sales@numberall.com).
Technical Maintenance & Safety Tips
The Model 50P’s precision demands careful handling—follow these guidelines from our product resources and user manual:
- Precision Cleaning & Lubrication * The “Grit” Rule — Tight tolerances mean dirt, metal slivers, or grit + oil acts like an abrasive, causing binding or damage. Always clean thoroughly (compressed air, wipe-down) before lubricating.
- Hot Stamping Warning — Never lubricate a heated head—oil burns, leaving carbon residue that seizes mechanisms.
- Recommended Lubricant — High-quality light machine oil for standard operation only. Apply sparingly to pivots, bearings, and moving parts.
- Burr Removal * Use a medium India stone to gently remove burrs on wheel edges, actuating arms, or pawls from heavy use. This preserves smooth indexing and prevents catching.
- Safety & Handling * Eye Protection — Mandatory: Pawl springs are under high tension and can eject forcefully during disassembly.
o Component Care — Never drop the actuating pawl or bend the retaining pawl shaft—these are precision-ground and critical for alignment.
Model 50P Precision Maintenance Checklist
Perform these checks to keep your head in peak condition:
Daily (High-Volume Use)
- [ ] Cleanliness: Wipe wheel faces and exterior of metal dust/slivers.
- [ ] Lubrication: 1-2 drops light oil (skip if heating or air-trip equipped).
- [ ] Index Test: Dry-run a few cycles to confirm consecutive advance without sticking.
Weekly
- [ ] Spring Inspection: Check coil return springs and pawl springs for thinning, fatigue, or deformation.
- [ ] Alignment: Verify retaining pawls are seated properly and not bent.
Monthly
- [ ] Detailed Cleaning: Remove from press; use compressed air to clear internal grit/debris.
- [ ] Burr Check: Inspect/stone wheels and arms for rough spots.
- [ ] Shaft Inspection: Ensure actuating pawl shaft moves freely and straight.
