The Numberall Legacy: Marking the World (and Beyond) Since 1930

The story of Numberall Stamp & Tool Co. is one of enduring American craftsmanship, innovation, and family dedication—spanning nearly a century and four generations. It all began in 1930 in Staten Island, New York, when founder Max Bayerdorffer, a master craftsman specializing in bird bands, sought a more efficient way to permanently identify his products.

Partnering with Tim Powers, Max developed the company’s first invention: the Single Wheel Rotary Stamp—a revolutionary tool that set the foundation for modern mechanical marking.
What started as a solution for a small shop quickly grew into an industry benchmark. As demand expanded, Numberall added custom-built machines so reliable and precise that even our competitors turned to us for their own needs.

A Tradition of Family Leadership & American Manufacturing

Numberall has remained a family-owned and operated business, guided by the Bayerdorffer legacy:

  • 1930 — Max Bayerdorffer founds the company in Staten Island, NY.
  • 1963 — Herman Bayerdorffer takes leadership, guiding the company through a period of intense industrial growth.
  • 1968–1983 — Production expands to Sangerville, Maine, eventually becoming our global headquarters.
  • 1996–Present — Daniel & Carl Bayerdorffer lead the company into the 21st century. Today, Max’s great-grandsons represent the fourth generation actively contributing to our growth.

This unwavering family commitment—combined with full in-house production in Maine—ensures superior quality control and direct support that overseas competitors simply cannot match.

From the Depths of the Ocean to the Moon

Numberall’s markings have traveled far beyond factory floors, proving their permanence in the most extreme environments:

  • Space Exploration: Numberall equipment marked components that journeyed to the moon aboard the Apollo Lunar Lander, ensuring traceability in one of humanity’s greatest achievements.
  • Defense & Submarines: Our tools identify critical components in the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet, where marks must survive extreme pressure, corrosion, and decades of submersion.
  • Every Continent: From cattle tags in agriculture to sophisticated electronic components in tech, Numberall solutions support traceability worldwide.

These applications highlight our core advantage: true structural permanence. Our deep mechanical indents become part of the material—surviving abrasion, coatings, chemicals, and heat where surface methods often fail.

Versatility in Every Strike

Numberall equipment handles virtually any material—from stainless steel and aluminum to brass and PVC—and any geometry:

  • Flat Parts: Nameplates, keys, pet tags, and data plates.
  • Cylindrical Parts: Pipes, shafts, bushings, and gas cylinders.
  • Complex Assemblies: Fully finished parts requiring compliant traceability (ISO, DOT, OSHA, MIL-STD-130, ATF).

A Testament to Enduring Quality

Thousands of Numberall tools remain in active service after 70+ years, requiring only basic maintenance. This “built-to-last” ethos, backed by lifetime parts availability for every unit ever made, makes Numberall the lowest total-cost-of-ownership choice in the marking industry.
