A Golden Half-Century in Maine: Numberall's Enduring Legacy of American Manufacturing
For over 50 years, Numberall Stamp & Tool Company has proudly called Maine home, solidifying its commitment to American manufacturing and delivering high-quality marking equipment from the heart of Sangerville. This milestone marks not just half a century in the Pine Tree State, but also the continuous evolution of a family legacy spanning four generations, built on dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to our customers.
From Staten Island Roots to Maine’s Enduring Strength
The story of Numberall began long before its move to Maine. Founded by Max Bayerdorffer in Staten Island, New York, the company’s genesis was born from a simple need: marking bird bands. This practical necessity led to the invention of the first Numberall product – a groundbreaking single-wheel rotary stamp.
Max successfully built the Numberall product line and led the business until his passing, when leadership transitioned to his son, Herman. It was in 1968 that Herman Bayerdorffer recognized a unique opportunity in Sangerville, Maine, establishing a new division of Numberall. This pivotal move laid the groundwork for the future, and by 1983, Numberall’s headquarters officially relocated to Sangerville, where operations continue robustly today, nestled beside the tranquil Carlton Stream.
The Torch Passes: A Legacy Forged from the Ground Up
The Bayerdorffer family’s dedication to Numberall is a testament to its longevity. Herman’s two sons, Daniel and Carl, began working at Numberall as teenagers, learning the ropes of the business from the grassroots level. By 1991, they were actively supporting daily operations, immersing themselves in every facet of the company.
Daniel and Carl weren’t just managers; they learned the business literally from the ground up, working on the shop floor, mastering manufacturing processes, understanding sales dynamics, navigating financial intricacies, and cultivating strong vendor relations. Carl, with his degree in Mechanical Engineering, brought a fresh perspective, significantly improving CAD design, enhancing operational efficiency, and refining marketing strategies to drive sales. Together, Daniel and Carl gained comprehensive knowledge of all parts of the business – sales, manufacturing, finance, and operations – taking on daily managerial responsibilities that prepared them for leadership.
In 2009, Herman proudly passed the presidential torch to Daniel, who continues to lead Numberall as President today. Daniel has successfully steered the company through various challenges, including economic downturns, global pandemics, and significant employee retirements. His foresight and leadership in implementing automation innovations have been crucial in adapting to these changes, cementing Numberall’s legacy for the next generation.
Four Generations of Excellence: The Bayerdorffer Family Continues
The recent celebration of Numberall’s 50th year in Maine was a heartfelt occasion, bringing together close friends, family members, dedicated employees (past and present), and valued vendors – all of whom have contributed immensely to the company’s remarkable longevity. The event honored the incredible commitment of its workforce, including one esteemed team member who had dedicated an astounding 48 years to Numberall, a testament to the company’s strong culture and average employee tenure of 19.5 years.
This milestone also celebrated the continuation of the Bayerdorffer generational success. Today, Max’s great-grandsons, Daniel’s sons, represent the fourth generation actively involved in the business. Alexander Bayerdorffer, Max’s great-grandson, began working full-time at Numberall two years ago. And in 2022, Daniel’s other son, Dieter Bayerdorffer, also joined Numberall, further solidifying the fourth generation’s commitment. Like Alexander, Dieter is diligently learning the business from the ground up, starting on the machine shop floor. He works directly with the machinery, contributes insights alongside the machinists, and gains a deep understanding of the manufacturing processes and overall business operations. Like many dedicated employees, both Alexander and Dieter “wear many hats,” contributing to various aspects from engineering and design to production control, ensuring that Numberall products are shipped efficiently and on time.
