Numberall Stamp and Tool Company’s history has spanned over 85 years. During this time, we’ve been recognized for our products’ quality and value, including by several industry publications. In the 1930s, our secretary, H.Q. Bates, wrote about the use of our products in a factory and had this article featured in Marking Industry Magazine. The article, called “Modern Marking,” was about how Numberall’s products helped to save the factory owner time and money. As a result, these products helped the business gain customers and be more successful.

“Modern Marking” was so well received that Marking Industry Magazine featured it as part of their Marking History column in the June 1986 issue. The article was 50 years old at the time. Even though the magazine ended publication one year ago, we have kept this article as an example of how Numberall has been an industry leader through the years. You can read this article for yourself here.
Even today, with outsourcing and machines taking over manufacturing, all of the statements from the article still ring true. Nearly 85 years later, we still save our clients time and money with our products. Whenever a client places an order, we customize it to meet their needs, and deliver it promptly. We still proudly manufacture and service our products at our facility in Sangerville, Maine. Most importantly, Numberall is still a leader in the marking industry.
Numberall’s products speak to its leadership in the industry. All of our products are fine examples of our quality, value, and service. If you are looking for a solution to help you save time and money like the factory owner in the article, we can help you. Our product chooser helps you compare our products and choose the one that is right for you by having you answer a few simple questions. If you would like more information about any of our products, please contact us.

At Numberall Stamp and Tool Company we offer a variety of products to meet your marking needs. Our numbering heads are a prime example as they are used to directly mark on the item you are stamping. We offer three models of these products known as our Model 80P, 83P, and 85P.

If you’ve narrowed your selections to these products, you may be wondering which one is right for you. Here is a numbering head model comparison to help you:
1. Model 80P is our one-wheel quick change. By rotating the knob, you can quickly rotate your ones digit only. You can go either direction. You use your spanner wrench to rotate your other wheels. It is good for low-volume serial numbering.
2. Model 85P is our two-wheel quick change. To operate, you slide the wheel shaft to the right and rotate the knurled knob to rotate your ones wheel and slide the wheel shaft to the left and rotate the knurled knob to rotate the tens wheel. You use your spanner wrench to rotate the other wheels. Along with the Model 80P, it has the wheel s indexed for direct sight reading on the wheels that can be rotated with the knobs.
3. Model 83P has two versions. The first has 12 wheels requiring two selector buttons. The second has less than 6 wheels and one selector button. To use, turn the selector button to the wheel you want to change, slide the wheel shaft till it hits the selector button, rotate the knurled knob to rotate the wheel. Repeat for the other wheels you need to change. It has the wheels indexed for direct sight reading on all wheels.
All of these numbering heads can be customized to your needs. Options include different character sizes, number of wheels, wheel arrangements, and letter wheels. They can be used manually or in a power press. To be used manually, all models come with a vinyl-coated hand shank. If you are choosing to use the device in a press, it can be customized to any type of power press. When placing an order, please be sure to specify the options you would like. If you would like to place an order or have additional questions about our products, please contact us.

To keep your Numberall product in good working order, regular maintenance must be done. For wear items and consumables, it is almost always more cost effective to buy the parts and do the repairs. The Model 40B is an excellent, cost-effective machine to do this with as it has no plastic or electric parts that break or need to be replaced annually.
This list of recommended spare parts and maintenance, along with your owner’s manual, will help you to maintain your Model 40B for years to come:

- Table Inserts are common replacement items because they slowly warp over time from the repeated pounding. The table insert can be moved fore and aft for line spacing.
- Character Dials are meticulously engraved with 42 characters and heat-treated to last. You can choose from 1/16”, 3/32”, 1/8”, 5/32”, and 3/16” character sizes.
- Spacing Racks. Character dials are interchangeable with the addition of different spacing racks. Extra-long tables and spacing racks are available for larger parts.
- Nests and Strip Holders. We also manufacture different sized nests and strip holders to make operation even simpler. All you have to do is drop or slide the tag into the nest or strip holder and start marking.
- Light Oil. An oil hole is provided on the front of the press just below the spacing adjustment screw. A few drops of light oil should be applied here if bearing surfaces appear dry. Lubricate once a day if used continuously.
- Dry Lubricant. Use dry lubricant to grease the character dial surface that is against dial plate, the table insert guides, and the table dovetail strip. Do not use oil.
If you need help maintaining your Model 40B or would like to order parts, please contact us. We have all parts in stock for immediate delivery including parts for custom made and discontinued machines. In addition, you can request a product manual by contacting us directly.

Numberall is known for products that last for decades. To make sure your machine lasts a long time, regular maintenance must be done. It is almost always more cost effective to perform regular maintenance than repair a damaged machine. The Model 50P is a machine that is a fine example of this. In fact, we are still servicing Model 50P numbering heads that are over 40 years old, a true testimonial to Numberall’s quality and design.
This list, along with your Model 50P owner’s manual, will help you to maintain your machine:

- Coil Return Springs. The coil return springs are part of the head of the Model 50P. These springs are under considerable tension and should be handled carefully. They are not required with the air trip feature, however, they will experience the most wear due to their location on the machine.
- Actuating Pawl. When removing the actuating pawl shaft, be careful not to drop the actuating pawl as it is easily broken.
- Actuating Pawl Spring. When maintaining your machine, always wear eye protection as the actuating pawl spring is under tension and could fly out. It can break prematurely due to wear, so it is recommended to keep one in stock.
- Retaining Pawls (Regular). Be careful not to bend the retaining pawls when using or maintaining your machine. If the retaining pawls are to be removed, maintain the original order for reassembly.
- Retaining Pawl (Unit). Care should be taken not to bend the retaining pawl shaft when using or maintaining your machine.
- Retaining Pawl Spring. Retaining pawl springs on numbering heads can break prematurely, so it is recommended to keep them in stock.
- Spare Wheels. Depending on use and the material being stamped, it is recommended to keep spare wheels in stock.
- Medium India Stone. If there are any burrs on the wheels or actuating arms, make sure to remove them using a medium India stone.
- Light Machine Oil. Lubricate the Model 50P. Care must be taken to ensure that dirt and grit are not in the machine before lubricating it. The tolerances are very tight, so any dirt and grit in the machine may bind or damage it. Do not lubricate a head that is to be heated as the oil will leave residue, which will bind the machine.
The location of these parts will vary on your machine based on options you’ve selected. However, the owner’s manual provides detailed images to help you identify them. If you need help maintaining your Model 50P or would like to order parts, please contact us. We have all parts in stock for immediate delivery including parts for custom made and discontinued machines. In addition, you can request a product manual by contacting us directly.

At Numberall, we stand behind our products. It’s inevitable that our products will become worn from regular use and need maintenance. We gladly service all of the products we sell, including discontinued items like the Model 48. Even if you’ve had your machine for a long time, we can service it. We have even had products sent to us for repair that were from the time our business was established in the 1930s.
The types of service we provide include tune-ups, cleaning, painting, part replacement, component realignment and any other required repairs. The frequency of maintenance depends on how well the customer maintained the product and how heavily they used the machine. Common replacement items include table inserts on the Model 40B that slowly warp over time from the repeated pounding, and retaining pawl springs on numbering heads that can break prematurely. We have all parts in stock for immediate delivery including parts for custom made and discontinued machines.
Cost is often a factor when it comes to repairs. At Numberall, we try to make our repairs as cost-effective as possible. The cost will vary depending on your needs. For wear items and consumables, it is almost always more cost effective to buy the parts and do the repairs as this is usually the fraction of the price of a new machine. For older machines, if the parts are damaged and need replacing then you will not want to pay more than half the cost of a new machine. For older machines, if the part replacement cost exceeds half that of a new machine then it might not be worth repairing. To replace those parts is quite expensive and can easily exceed the cost of a new machine when combined with the purchase of a used machine.
However, if you are sending us an older machine to be serviced, it is helpful to know the age. Especially if you’ve purchased one of our older machines secondhand on eBay or from anywhere else. You can tell the date of manufacture by reading the last three digits of the serial number. The first digit is a letter that indicates the month and the next two digits are the year of manufacture. If you’re interested in purchasing an older machine secondhand, we are willing to answer questions you may have.
If you’re not sure about the kind of service you need, we can help you. Customers can send in their machines for repair quotes and we won’t charge anything until the service is approved. All you need to do is deliver the machine to our location in Sangerville, Maine. If you live further away, you can ship your machine to us and we will have it shipped back to you once it is serviced.
If you like to do repairs yourself, you can do that with your Numberall product. All of our machines can be serviced by the customer. The instruction manuals for all machines include directions on assembling and reassembling the machines. They also include simple directions on things to look for when troubleshooting the machine. In addition, the manuals have a list of common consumable items and general maintenance. Finally, we have videos on some of the adjustments you can make to the machines.
Whether your machine needs to be repaired or just regular maintenance, Numberall can help you. The fact that we service everything we sell shows our commitment to not just our products, but our customers as well. If you have one of our products that needs to be serviced or repaired, please contact us.
